Guess who's back to wreak havoc on all of the unsuspecting and they've brought the tanks back. Yes it's every one's favorite Swedish Black Metal band MARDUK. OK saying "every one's" is a stretch but hey I like em a lot. Iron Dawn is only three songs but they're worth it especially if you consider this a taste of what will come with their next full length. World War Two has broken out again on record with this one and there's plenty of theme sound effects like the obvious rolling tanks (Panzers of course) plus Stuka dive bombers, artillery blasts, machine guns blazing, troops screaming and some war song snippets in the background. The first song "Warschau 2: Headhunter Halfmoon" is a reminder of the full on attack of their past Panzer Division Marduk era except now with Mortuus adding his angry deeper vocal delivery to the mix. This follows suit with the second cut "Wacht Am Khein: Drumbeats Of Death" which is another reminder of MARDUK's blackened thrash and burn era except now with Morgan (guitarist and sole original member) accepting the challenge of being a better songwriter everything has a fuller structure. I also believe there's another reason.
The rebirth of this band started back when Mortuus (also in FUNERAL MIST) took over vocal duties in 2004 from Legion, debuting on the Plague Angel full length. Since then he and Morgan have made this band darker, given it a fuller sound and are far more blasphemous in their attack. The obvious examples are the band's last three studio full lengths and on here it's the third track "Prochorovka: Blood and Sunflowers". The band slows things down a bit to allow the foreboding atmosphere to overwhelm the listener. For this release I can imagine it as the smoke of the battlefield. All in all for a MARDUK fan like myself not only do I like this one but it has now pushed my anticipation meter for the full length a lot higher.
